to nancy pelosi. >> does this get easier once boehner gets reelected as majority leader? >> hopefully we don't get to that point, but that senate bill did not get a single republican vote. >> jonathan, answer my question. does this get easier? >> let's pretend we're not going have a deal and january 3rd comes and boehner, he hopes gets reelected as speaker of the house, then the deal get easier to get done? >> this isn't even an issue. >> oh, come on! you know what i'm asking here! >> speaker boehner will get reelected and that's not the issue and the issue is not to pass something through the senate that can go on to pass the house. >> john, do you think that the republicans bill which essentially goes after programs for the poor increases military spending? so it adds to the deficit and only is willing to raise taxes on millionaires and above and that is getting through the senate. so what you're saying the reverse is true when you look at the house. boehner can pass the senate bill tomorrow as harry reid said today, but he doesn't want to do it with democrats and he wants a majority o

, but that is after dropping off. >> we have learned that nancy pelosi is saying that senate leaders will try to craft a fiscal cliff deal. as ben said, they are not giving any details, no specifics, they're not going to, but nancy pelosi said it will try to craft some sort of deal to avoid heading off the edge of the fiscal cliff. >>> the outgoing prime minister mario monti said he will contest the general election in february. he will lead a coalition of supporting his reform agenda. his appointment last year as the head of the technocratic government sought to end the financial crisis. former prime minister silvio berlusconi is rounding out his new year with a divorce, pinning his ex-wife almost $4 million per month. he was accused of having relationships with young women. the venezuelan president hugo chavez cents a message of faith to his supporters from his hospital bed. the message said that well- wishers and supporters were helping his recovery following the cancer operation. there is been speculation over whether his health has left him fit to lead the country. >>> a 6-year-old british girl w

to meet with house speaker john boehner, minority leader nancy pelosi, senate majority harry reid and minority leader mitch mcconnell. that is happening this afternoon. jessica yellin is there. jess, what do we know about the president's plan to get everybody in the same room? do we think there's going to be something that comes out of this? >> reporter: well, this is one of those cases where we really are going to have to wait and see, and all the parties involved are also going in with a big question mark. the idea is the expectation by many of the participants in the meeting is that they hope that they will be able to discuss more details about a scaled-down fiscal cliff plan. and maybe that could lead to some sort of agreement ideally for all parties in which all the senators say that they will not filibuster it, and it can go to a vote. and then speaker boehner could, in theory, agree to bring it to a vote on the house floor after the house comes back on sunday. and then we would get all of this behind us before new year's eve. how likely does that sound? not so likely. >> yo

from a great women leaders like nancy pelosi, very much open and wanting to share. women who feel secure about themselves can give support to other women. that is an important element. to allow for new ideas to emerge. great ideas come from other women that are doing some great things. if they are doing well, they are going to make me look good. that is the kind of spirit i like to see. >> are the small things women can do? is it talking about the pressures? >> it is more than just talking. if you are engaged in a work environment together, it is allowing for somebody to take on any project or allowing somebody to flush out ideas and put them in place and then learn from that. not everything is going to be perfect. "it is ok. we are going to work on getting a better." that is when you learn about how to perfect what you want to do. that happens in any environment. we need to talk about it more directly. those discussions are always tapered down for women. >> what you wish you knew when you work 17 and you said keep striving. it is not about how many times you get knocked down. it

to see what happens when you let partisan democrats like harry reid and nancy pelosi call the shots. >> marty, you are calling on the democrat line. what is your reaction? caller: the president needs to get the republicans come back in from christmas holiday. >> what do you think is gonna happen? >> we are on the verge of a fiscal cliff and they are still on vacation. >> let's go to mike in texas, on our line for republicans. >> i agree with the first guy. i wish they would have a little backbone and force obama and reid into not giving in to them. they need to set a budget and stick with a budget, and what they are trying to do is they want more money so they can increase the debt again, and they are about to run this country, as far as i am content. host: out the you think this will end up? caller: i hope boehner holds to his guns. i think the million-dollar deal is a good deal where anybody making over a million dollars pace a little bit more money, but i do not buy that $250 deal. host: that's good to marry in florida. c-span.e on caller: i believe the average american should no

. obama had nancy pelosi as speaker of the house. but hardly the same thing. host: from massachusetts on the line, democrat. caller: good morning. i have a comment and question. i am trying to find out, the situation you're in right now, why is everybody fighting about what we should do? i am gmt and i am broke every day. i'm down here with people that paid taxes and work hard every day. -- i am an emt. people don't understand that would ever happens with the fiscal cliff, people down here will survive. the republicans, this will definitely affect them in the future. i talked to people all over boston every day. nobody wants to vote for republicans anymore, because of the fact that they don't seem to care about people that struggle everyday. it's the people that have money but don't care about people who don't have money. it's been like that for hundreds of years. it's time for change. we have a democrat in the chair. the republicans had their chance when they had pushed. there's a lot of things that should be changed in this world. we rant on about the economics, but we should be wor

on a call. i hope they conclude as we have concluded -- and i speak for leader pelosi and myself and all the democratic leadership -- that we must come back as soon as possible to work together to reach compromise, to ensure that we address the important legislation that is still pending in this congress, a congress which i believe has been the least productive, most confrontational, the least compromising congress in which i have served, and i have been here since 1981. the senate tomorrow will consider the sandy supplemental legislation. hopefully they will pass that tomorrow or by saturday. certainly, the house of representatives needs to address that supplemental to give relief to those that were savaged by sandy in the worst storm that has hit the northeast perhaps in history. the violence against women act passed senate overwhelmingly, something that we could work on today. the farm bill expires on december 31. milk prices will spike substantially if that bill is left to expire. mr. cantor indicated that would be addressed before we left here at the end of the 112th congress. that
